About Amy and her work....
I am a contemporary artist originally from the Highlands of Scotland now living and creating in Edinburgh. In the summer of 2011 I graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Painting form Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen.
My work looks at the theme of memory and the elements that surround it such as identity, personal history and storytelling. Using images developed from recall, extracts from diaries and various collected memorabilia I attempts to re-assemble and re-imagine significant memories.
Working in layers, I uses a mixture of paint, print, text, drawing and collage to create fragmented growing pieces where images and words appear and disappear like the layers of a distant memory.
Text plays an important role in my work. Memories are all about storytelling and I incorporated handwriting in the form of confessional writing, extracts from diaries and poetry. The text is often subverted- I play with scale and direction and edit and erase elements. This way the viewer is left to determine the meaning of each piece, drawing on their own life stories- in much the same way that we all remember the same events differently.
I have an obsessive need to record and contain my experiences; the fear of forgetting, of losing who I am, what I know, permeates through me. This is what pushes me to create.
I am currently an artist at Debut Contemporary, www.debutcontemporary.com.
